Winter...almost

Two decent sized cold fronts moved over the south island this week, dumping snow below 1000m over much of the main divide and it's sub-ranges. Bracketed by these fronts was a couple of perfectly clear, crisp, bluebird days which we fluked being in the Mt Cook, Mckenzie basin area for. Moving in the mountains in these conditions is slow and tiring. You can't just skip across giant talus fields on dry, grippy rock like you would in the summer months and there isn't enough snow to fill in the huge, gaping rock slots and crevasses. But it is incredibly beautiful.
